Sound Bite - A Foodnome Experience

November 07, 2019

Welcome to Sound Bite, a unique exploration of the senses. Our team set out to showcase a thoughtful interaction between taste and tune. Over a three course meal supplied by home cooks, diners would enjoy a delicious feast as the sweet sounds of local musicians washed over their aural palette.

‘Twas a misty October morn as the Foodnome team descended upon Green Valley Farm + Mill. Questions, and an impending smell of home cooked food, hung in the air.

When will the bands arrive? Will the rain let up? Who will peel these beets? Will our guests come on time, or will their food get cold? Could all, in fact, be for naught?

Akshay, Foodnome’s founder, cast anxiety aside and began preparing his meal while the incredibly talented support staff got to work setting up and handling arrival logistics.

Home cooks rolled in and began their meal preparation. Each cook planned to serve a full course accented by musical accompaniment, so they had their work cut out for them.

Band members started arriving, and some gathered on the porch of the farm’s guest house for a quick rehearsal before the night’s event.

As guests arrived they perused the farm’s grounds, snacking and making conversation with other attendees. Jared Hipler, our fabulous emcee for the night, entertained the growing crowd with a series of games that helped get everyone into an interactive mood.

As the sun set, everyone moved into the venue space and took a seat at the long communal dining tables. After a quick introduction from Jared, the first performance began setting the comfortable tone which would carry on through the rest of the night.

Maya Elise, a folk singer songwriter performing up and down the west coast over the next few months, gave a beautiful performance alongside M’Gilvry Allen who accompanied on vocals and violin.

The first course came out, served by Oakland based Bosnian home cook Sanela Mlivo to a hungry crowd ready for comfort food.

Performances continued with Gabe Saron and Jonah Warschaw infusing bluegrass into the room while Akshay served his delicious beet salad.

Finally, Speakeasē brought the house down with some funky neosoul while the jazzy legend himself James O’Brien Makowski served diners a delicious course of trout.

The night rounded out with festive dancing, and guests wound their way in and out of conversation as they found their cars. The event crew bid goodnight to guests, home cooks, and bands before heading to bunk at the farm house and talk late into the night, enjoying a brunch of leftovers the following morning.
